Investigations & Decisions

Decisions

Throughout the years, many cases covering a wide range of issues, such as use of force and breach of RCMP core values, have been brought to the Commission's attention. When reviewing a complaint, the Commission examines information provided by both the complainant and the RCMP. The Commission may agree with the RCMP's initial investigation or find that the complainant's allegations are founded. In its reports, the Commission makes recommendations aimed at improving RCMP conduct and national policing policy.

The review reports are intended to highlight significant issues and illustrate the types of recommendations the Commission has made to the RCMP. Please note that personal or protected information has been removed from these reports in accordance with the Privacy Act.

Public Interest Investigations

Regardless of whether or not a complaint has been investigated, reported on, or otherwise dealt with by the RCMP, the Chair may investigate or institute a public hearing into a complaint concerning the conduct of a member where he or she deems it in the public interest.

Public Hearings

The Chair of the CPC can convene a public hearing to hear evidence when the Chair considers that this course of action is in the public interest.

Public hearings are rare and are usually reserved for complaints where the CPC determines that important details will surface only through a hearing.
