An EKOS survey undertaken by the Commission in March 2007 found that, while 66 per cent of respondents thought it was important that there be an independent review body whose role is to monitor the activities of the RCMP, less than 40 per cent were aware of the Commission. Moreover, the survey concluded that generally more people were comfortable bringing complaints to the Commission than directly to the RCMP.

To ensure the oversight model adequately evolves to keep pace with the ever-changing police environment, the Commission continues to expand its outreach activities to various client communities.

The Chair and Vice-Chair meet regularly with representatives from diverse communities to gain a deeper understanding of how the Commission can enhance its effectiveness. For example, the CPC consults with Aboriginal organizations, including friendship centres, to determine how to make the complaints intake process more accessible.

The Commission also collaborates with provincial civilian review organizations to address common challenges.
